Exploring the Evolution: From UN’s ‘International Year of the Disabled Persons’ to the Rehabilitation Council of India.
EXPLORE:
This course explores the development of rehabilitation services for persons with disabilities in India, especially after the United Nations declared ‘The International Year of the Disabled Persons’ in 1981.
In response, the Government of India established the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) in 1986 to address the shortage of trained professionals. The Parliament further amended the RCI Act in 2000 to ensure a comprehensive approach, aiming to regulate and standardize the education and training of professionals and rehabilitation personnel serving individuals with disabilities. The course emphasizes how the establishment of the RCI, along with legislative amendments, led to a more organized and systematic approach to rehabilitation services.
